Retro Freak Firmware Update History

You can check the details of each update in the past.

  • 07-27-2018

    Version 2.7
    [Application: ver2.7(build3241)]

    To update to ver2.7, your console has to be already updated to ver1.5 and later.
    If your Retro Freak is ver1.0 - ver1.4, update to ver1.5 first before updating to ver2.7.

    • External cartridge adapter for Super Famicon is now available.
    • 5-port controller hub for Super Famicon is now available.
    • Arcade Stick shortcut error has been fixed.
    • Game Information data base has been updated.
    • Some errors have been fixed.
  • 03-27-2018

    Version 2.6
    [Application: ver2.6(build3150)]

    • Arcade Stick for Retro Freak is now supported.
    • Hotkey “Cheats master toggle” is added. By pressing OPTION + B (default setting for the standard controller), you can switch on/off the activated Cheat Function without going to the game menu during a game.
    • Game Information data base has been updated.
    • Some errors have been fixed.

    Version 2.5
    [Application: ver2.5(build3089)]

    • French, German and Polish languages have been added to the language selection.
    • English instruction manuals when English language is selected has been renewed (same as the one available on the web site).
    • Fixed an issue with new DUALSHOCK4 (CUH-ZCT2J) that ○ key wasn't responding to selected menu under Game Menu
    • Game Information data base has been updated.
    • Some minor errors have been fixed.
To update to the latest version, your console has to be already updated to ver1.5 and later. If your Retro Freak is older than ver1.4, update to ver1.5 first before updating to the latest version.

Steps to update Retro Freak

Follow the direction below to update Retro Freak.

  • *To update, you will be required to have microSD (sold separately), and a computer with capability of reading microSD (such as, microSD card reader, microSD to SD Memory card adaptor, or microSD to USB adaptor)
  1. To Write Firmware Update Request from Retro Freak

    • *To update, use the Firmware Update write-up created past ver1.5. The write-up created before ver1.4 is no longer applicable.

    Insert microSD into the console, and select [Write Firmware Update Request to microSD] under [System Settings.] Confirm with [A] button.

    Once the export is done, there will be a popup window to notify the completion.

  2. Close the window first, and then eject the microSD from the console. Insert the microSD into your computer

    • *Your computer will need microSD reader, microSD to SD Memory card adaptor, or microSD to USB adaptor.
  3. Obtain Retro Freak Update Data

    Open the link below to open a download page for Retro Freak Update Data

  4. Click [Choose File] in the Update Data Download page, then select [retrofreak-update-request.dat] from the microSD made in the Step 2.

    • * Download display may be different depending on your web browser
    • * Depending on your web browser, the [Choose File] button maybe displayed as [Browse...]
  5. Initiate downloading [retrofreak-update.bin] by clicking [Download] button. Copy and place this file into the same directory as [retrofreak-update-request.dat]

    • *When there is already a file with same name (from previous update procedures), the newly downloaded file will have a number, such as -1, at the end of the filename. This will prevent to update correctly if the number is left attached; update the file name and copy into the microSD folder.

  6. Update the Retro Freak

    Insert the microSD into the Retro Freak console while the console system is ON. A popup confirmation will be displayed.

  7. Select [Proceed] and start the update. This may take a few seconds to few minutes.

    • *While updating, do not turn off the console or eject microSD.

    When update is over, Retro Freak will automatically restart.

  8. After the restart, accept the End User Agreement to complete the update

    • * When update is complete, the update file [retrofreak-update.bin] will automatically deleted from microSD.
    • *Depending on the update version, there may be additional updates will be proceeded for application and cartridge adaptor updates. In this case, do not interrupt updates, follow the direction displayed on the screen and complete entire updates.
  9. Updates for accessory

    If the update data contains updates for the cartridge adaptor or the controller adaptor, connect each accessory, then the update confirmation will appear upon connecting those accessories. (If the accessories were already connected to the system, their updates would appear after accepting the End User Agreement)Always accept and proceed with updates when the update notification is displayed.

Version1.5 includes system update and its update process is different from typical updates. Read the following instruction. This is common process for updating to Ver1.5 from all versions.

Retro Freak Update (Update to version1.5)

Follow the direction below to update Retro Freak.

  • *To update, you will be required to have microSD (sold separately), and a computer with capability of reading microSD (such as, microSD card reader, microSD to SD Memory card adaptor, or microSD to USB adaptor).
  • *About 180MB free space on your microSD is needed for this update
  1. Obtain Retro Freak Update Data

    Open the link below to open a download page for Retro Freak Update Data

    • *Downloaded file will be Zip file. Double click it to extract the file.
    • * Download display may be different depending on your web browser.
  2. Copy the extracted file, [retrofreak-system-update.img], into the root directory of microSD.

  3. Update RetroFreak

    Insert the microSD into the Retro Freak console while the console system is ON. A popup confirmation will be displayed.

  4. Select [Proceed] and start the update. This may take a few seconds to few minutes.

    • *While updating, do not turn off the console or eject microSD.

    When update is over, Retro Freak will automatically restart.

  5. After the restart, accept the End User Agreement to complete the update

    • * When update is complete, the update file [retrofreak-system-update.img] will automatically be deleted from microSD.
